New Mobile Pantry Van Hits the Road

Charity Food Ministry's mobile pantry van made its first official run in January 2026, and it is already changing who we are able to reach. Purchased and outfitted thanks to a generous community donation, the van now travels a bi-weekly route serving neighborhoods across three South Carolina counties — bringing groceries directly to the streets where our neighbors live.

Why a Mobile Pantry?

For years, the biggest barrier facing the families we serve was not a shortage of food. It was distance. Rural Chester County and its neighboring communities have limited public transportation, and a round trip to a fixed pantry location can cost a family a tank of gas they cannot spare or a shift of work they cannot afford to miss.

"We learned that a pantry with open doors is still closed if you can't get to it," said Sandra Johnson, Program Director. "So instead of asking families to travel to the food, we decided to take the food to the families. The van removes the one obstacle we could never solve from a parking lot in Chester."

Three Counties, One Route

The van operates on a published bi-weekly schedule with stops hosted at partner churches, community centers, and apartment complex commons areas. Each stop lasts about ninety minutes, long enough for neighbors to walk over, choose groceries, and talk with a volunteer without feeling rushed.

Every stop carries the same core inventory as our fixed-site distribution: shelf-stable staples, protein, dairy when refrigeration allows, and fresh produce sourced through our local farm partners. Wherever possible, we use a client-choice model, letting each household select the items that fit their family's needs, diets, and cooking situation rather than handing out identical pre-packed boxes.

Equipped for the Work

The van was fitted with shelving, insulated cold storage, and a fold-out serving side so volunteers can set up and break down a full distribution in minutes. That matters in a rural route, where an afternoon thunderstorm or a tight turnaround between stops can otherwise cost an entire service window.

Two trained volunteer teams currently share driving and distribution duties. Because the van is self-contained, a stop requires only three people — which means we can add locations without straining the volunteer schedule that supports our other programs.

What Comes Next

Our goal for 2026 is to expand from the current bi-weekly rotation toward weekly service at the highest-need stops, and to add new locations as we identify gaps in coverage. Each additional stop requires fuel, food inventory, and volunteers — all of which come directly from community support.
