Weekend Backpack Program Reaches 120 Children
Charity Food Ministry's Weekend Backpack Program has reached a milestone we could barely imagine when it began: 120 children across four Chester County schools now receive a discreet bag of food every Friday afternoon. That is double the number of students we served the year before.
The Weekend Gap
For many students, school is the most reliable source of food in their week. Free and reduced-price breakfast and lunch cover Monday through Friday — and then the weekend arrives. Two days without those meals is enough to leave a child hungry, distracted, and behind by Monday morning.
The backpack program exists to close that gap. Each bag holds enough kid-friendly, shelf-stable food for roughly six meals plus snacks: single-serve cereal and oatmeal, shelf-stable milk, canned fruit, peanut butter, crackers, pasta cups, and juice. Everything is chosen to be simple enough that a child can prepare it without an adult in the kitchen.
How the Program Works
Students are identified quietly by school counselors and social workers, who know their families and circumstances best. Our volunteers never see a name attached to a need. Bags are delivered to each school in unmarked totes, and counselors place them in backpacks or lockers before dismissal on Friday.
"Dignity is the whole design," said Sandra Johnson, Program Director. "A child should never have to raise their hand in front of classmates to receive food. If we do this right, the only people who know are the child, the counselor, and their family."
Doubling in One Year
Growing from 60 to 120 students meant doubling nearly everything behind the scenes: food purchased, packing hours, storage space, and Friday delivery runs. Our volunteer packing team now assembles roughly 480 bags each month, working assembly-line style on a standing weekly shift.
The expansion to a fourth partner school came at the direct request of that school's counseling staff, who had a waiting list of families and no program to refer them to. Rather than ask them to wait for the next budget cycle, our volunteers absorbed the additional route immediately and we adjusted purchasing to match.
Sustaining 120 Bags a Week
At current food costs, sponsoring one child for a full school year runs approximately $180 — about $5 per weekend. Community sponsorships, church partnerships, and individual monthly donors carry the program, and every additional gift moves us closer to serving the students still waiting at schools we have not yet reached.
- $5 fills one weekend backpack for one child
- $180 sponsors one student for an entire school year
- Volunteer packers are needed for our weekly assembly shift
- Food drives focused on single-serve, kid-friendly items directly stock the program
